1. Cerwin Vega 380SE: A Masterpiece in Sound and Aesthetics

The Cerwin Vega 380SE speakers stand as a testament to auditory and visual artistry. Boasting a robust and attractive design, these speakers captivate not only with their appearance but also with their expansive soundstage.

Their performance in delivering deep, rich lows and sharp, clear highs is remarkable, with the mids perfectly blending into the audio experience as they should.

My introduction to the CV 380SEs came through many listening sessions, courtesy of my uncle who acquired them during his high school years from a local audio shop around 1991.

He paired them with an old Pioneer 125RMS 8ohm receiver, a purchase from 1994 valued at $400. Despite this setup not being the ideal match for these speakers, they still managed to produce a fair sound quality, especially noted in the bass that resonated impressively. Given their 4OHM impedance, it’s likely he was driving around 250W through them.

Marking a milestone, these speakers were among the pioneers to be digital-ready, coinciding with the era of CD players. Their design is strikingly contemporary, featuring the MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) configuration, a front baffle adorned with black felt for an elegant touch, poly-treated mids, sleek black cabinets, and grill covers accented with a red stripe alongside level adjustments.

A notable feature is the 15.25″ woofer, surrounded by a pleated rubber instead of the conventional rolled foam, ensuring its longevity without the need for replacement.

The woofer cone itself is notable for its pleated and sturdy design, a unique feature that was only incorporated into two models – the 380SE and the PD-9.

I would confidently wager that the dynamic range of this speaker is unmatched in any offering under the $10k mark.

In my experience, I’ve yet to come across speakers that surpass this level of performance outside of professional DJ equipment, which comes with a significantly higher price tag.

As for a modern counterpart, there simply isn’t one.

2. Cerwin Vega VS 150: A Legacy of Sound

We acquired these powerhouse speakers from a family member who found them on eBay for about $800.

Boasting deep bass, crisp mids, and highs, the VS 150 models are equipped with slow-blow fuses at the back, which have been blown a few times but have not compromised their fantastic sound quality.

Large and hefty, each speaker weighs over 90 pounds. They demand at least 150 watts for optimal sound, though they still perform well with smaller amps. The more power, the better.

Currently, we use them with a Yamaha A-S1100SL, providing 90 watts per channel, and they impress even at low volumes.

It’s crucial to use a compatible amplifier, rated for 10-100,000 Hz, stable at 4 ohms, to avoid mismatching their potential. Critics often compare them unfavorably to other brands, citing less clarity in the tweeters, but in our experience, especially compared to some Klipsch models we’ve owned, the VS 150s offer superior sound with no need for a subwoofer.

Maintenance is the only real challenge, particularly the orange liner around the bass speaker, which needs annual checks to prevent wear from affecting sound clarity.

3. Cerwin Vega D-9: The Rock and Funk Champion

With the right amp, the bass produced is phenomenal. Curiously, even adding a Cerwin Vega 15″ powered subwoofer made no significant difference, showcasing the D-9’s inherent bass capabilities.

Their performance notably improves when hooked up to high-quality, powerful amplifiers (120w+), with the dual 6-inch mids and horn tweeter delivering clear and robust sound. Unlike many 15″ speakers, the highs aren’t overshadowed by the bass here.

They come equipped with a woofer fuse and a tweeter reset control, adding a layer of protection that helps ensure their longevity, even when purchasing a used set.

While not the go-to for low-volume classical music, for genres like funk and rock, they stand unmatched in their price range. Having explored numerous speakers throughout my audio journey, including towers and “monkey coffins” like the D-9s, none have matched their performance at loud volumes for rock and metal, or their ability to bring blues alive in a room, perfectly capturing the essence of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar.

Having recently acquired another pair, I’m set on enhancing them for even more years of unrivaled sound.

For those seeking a modern equivalent, the Polk Audio S60 emerges as a compelling choice. This 3-way floor-standing speaker includes a 1-inch high-resolution tweeter, a 6.5-inch midrange driver, and two 6.5-inch woofers, covering a frequency range of 26 Hz to 40 kHz to deliver an immersive, powerful audio experience.

4. Cerwin Vega VS 120: A Standout Performer

The Cerwin Vega VS 120 speakers have the prowess to outshine numerous audio competitors.

Produced in 1990, these speakers boast original coils that have stood the test of time without any breakdowns, showcasing their robust construction and quality components. However, they’re known among audiophiles to have their mids somewhat lacking.

Without the need for an equalizer, the sound they produce is impressive, offering pure tone. The bass is appropriately subtle, adding depth without overwhelming, while the tweeters create a delicate presence that enhances the listening experience without being intrusive.

The mids bring a unique dimension to the music, elevating vocals and mid-range instruments to create an intimate auditory experience, akin to having the vocalist right in your lap. This effect is especially captivating with vocal-centric albums.

Despite their balanced horn distribution, there’s a noticeable gap in the frequency range from 700Hz to 3.7Khz, typically affecting the transition between midrange and treble.

To address this, we engineered a balanced crossover to smooth out the frequency transition and integrated neodymium drivers with carbon fiber covers akin to the originals. These tweaks achieved an almost flat response, further refineable with minimal EQ adjustments.

The end result of these modifications mirrors what could also be achieved through EQ correction, albeit with the necessity of active power management.

For a modern counterpart, consider the KEF Q950. This 3-way floor-standing speaker includes a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, a 5.25-inch Uni-Q driver array, and dual 8-inch bass drivers, spanning a frequency response of 44 Hz to 28 kHz for a detailed and harmonious sound profile.

5. Cerwin Vega E-715: The Party Powerhouse

The Cerwin Vega E-715 stands as the epitome of what Cerwin Vega represents, making it a must-have for those seeking a genuine party speaker capable of energizing the room for hours. Its versatility ensures it also performs excellently at lower volumes.

The speaker’s most formidable feature is its low-frequency bass response, unparalleled in its class for being articulate, deep, and punchy. The midrange, however, falls a bit short, lacking depth and volume to the extent of sounding somewhat muffled.

On the brighter side, the tweeter performs admirably, delivering robust power and a crisp, clear output, though it can sound a bit screechy, particularly with electric guitar sounds, and sometimes lacks depth.

A significant consideration is the speaker’s power requirements. While a 150W stereo/surround sound receiver can manage at average volume levels, to truly unleash the E-715’s potential, investing in a dedicated power amplifier with a separate pre-amp is recommended.

Operating these speakers with lower power receivers at high volumes can lead to distortion and potentially damage the speakers due to overloading.

It’s worth noting that underpowering is more harmful than overpowering these speakers. They don’t quite meet the mark for “audiophile” standards in terms of finesse and sound staging.
